The Institute was established by the New Delhi Communication Network Limited (NCNL) in the year 2004. NCNL is a media production house producing Audio-Visual programs for various channels for the last fifteen years. It is empanelled with Doordarshan, DAVP, NFDC, IGNOU and various Ministries of the government of India.

IMCS is an associated study institute of the reputed Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University for Journalism & Communication, Bhopal. The University was set up by Act Number 15 of 1990 of the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
