Changing Trends of Animation
May 7, 2010 – 6:04 pmWe can entitle animation as the most creative output of science and technology. This particular area has gone through several changes since its inception. The trend in the animation industry has constantly been changing due to the changing demands of the industry.
Although, the most interesting period we can say was from 30s to 50s. The cartoon characters belonging to those eras can better explain the type of changes that have emerged. During 30s, the animation was not something that defined advanced personalities, instead it was all fun and the idea of animation used to revolve around exaggeration of fun wrapped around the characters for just a mundane purpose. During these times, the characters did not wear any expression but the tricks of animation was purely based on their poses and acts that were quite readable and enough to draw your attention.
During 40s, new tools and techniques started to apply in the animation, to enhance its creative efforts. Their creation was nothing but a combination of humor and magic ingrained in the characters made audience went crazy that time. With a touch of personal point of view, they added something very new to the animation and the audience went nuts. Such type of human-friendly cartoons became extremely popular and that is why they are still popular among people of all ages.
In 50s, the animators, in an attempt to bring something new, moved their idea from bouncy, rubbery characters to walky talky animated characters that could walk from one scene to another. In this era, the characters had to say their lines, act, react and then go to the next scene by walking from the previous one. This trend of animation was given the title “Illustrated Radio” by Jones. The two dimensional graphic was also introduced in this particular decade.
With the advent of computer technology, the 3D animation was introduced in 1970s, while the term computer graphics was already coined in 1960 by William Fetter. Though these forms of three dimensional graphics were more advanced and was much better representation of geometric data, it has undergone several changes over the years. The changes occur in animation trend is due to the introduction and development of many tools and techniques over the years.
Currently, three-dimensional paper animation among sculpture, cut-out, origami has been introduced as a major trend across multiple arena including, designing, animation, illustration and others. The first major example of paper sculpture that was a mighty impressive work altogether was Virgil Widrich’s Fast Film from 2003. Then came Jamie Caliri’s “Dragon” spot for United Airlines, during the 2006 Super Bowl. After seeing these two greatest paper animation work, we can say that animation artists all over seem to be enjoying creating such animated figures with paper technique.
The trends of animation have repeatedly been changing as per the taste and likings of the audience. But today, the animation industry has strengthened its sustenance by increasing its contribution in every industry. Over the years, its demand has increased with inception of gaming and film industry, or in the naval field, it is used for preparing ship’s models. Also, in the medical field and astronomy, animation has better uses that help explain different concepts and techniques in the better way.
