With Obama’s win, is India BPO sector at loss?

November 14, 2008 – 7:27 pm

The echoes are being heard already. Opinions pour in that with Obama winning the US president-ship, India may witness a slower growth in Business Process Outsourcing sector. The whirl had been alive since Obama commented a need to stop outsourcing the work from US, in one of his pre-election campaigns. Now that the elections are over with Obama being the new king, India is already under a flurry. However, if analysts are to be believed, discouraging outsourcing would not be so easy, if not impossible. The reasons stated are few and many.

In face of the dipping economy, India’s strong hold in technology outsourcing could prove a cherry on the cake for The United States. Even the Indian Nasscom officials who had words with Obama’s officials are confident that the newly chosen leader has high aspirations for outsourcing and sees the concept in a positive light.
Also, it could bring a major stir in the US business sector as almost 50% of their business comes from outsourcing. So considering the sad face of US economy, there are fewer chances of outsourcing in India being hit by a hammer’s strike. Now whether the President acts agile and bans outsourcing once US economy is stable, is a thing to ponder. So are Indians now left with the adage, “Hope for the best, be prepared for the worst”?
