Nano’s journey: Trinamool ready to work out a solution

September 1, 2008 – 1:00 pm

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Sunday showed signs that her party is ready for some solution on Tata Nano project in Singur. Speaking at Singur soon after her party men met West Bengal governor; she said if the government accepted that it made a mistake by acquiring land from farmers, her party might consider ways to work out a solution.

“As per the governor’s request, we are ready for talks. But the state government has to first acknowledge that agriculture lands were acquired forcibly from unwilling peasants. The details and technicalities can be worked out,” she said. The 400 acres Trinamool asking for was already been earmarked for automobile parts manufacturers. Tata’s are not ready to give away this land.

For the first time, Ms Banerjee avoided reiterating her principal demand — the return of 400 acres of Singur farmlands. She is still playing games with left front and suggested 40% of the acquired land be returned. “Both the agriculture and industry should co-exist side by side. Our representatives have suggested to the governor that he should urge the state government to ensure that 60% of the land be demarcated for setting up of the plant and 40% be given away for agricultural use,” added Ms Banerjee.
