Today I’m reminiscent of the Robert Southey quote: “No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those who are thoroughly persuaded of each other’s worth.” Something similar has happened amongst our Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh and Amartya Sen. Not heard of him? Arey, he is India’s Nobel laureate winner for his contributions to welfare economics! He won the award in 1998, and…Well, for full stories you can refer Wikipedia. I’m to tell you something else…

Recently, our Manmohan Signh ji honored Amartya Sen at a conference held at Vigyan Bhavan in the capital. Did you say what the connection is? Well, the two brainies used to study together in Cambridge University! They were class-fellows and shared good friendship. Recently, our PM Sahib has released a book in honor of Amartya Sen entitled “Arguments for a Better World: Essays in honor of Professor Amartya Sen”, edited by Ravi Kanbur and Kaushik Basu, esteemed persons from Cornell University. Both MS and AS thanked each other, praised each other, wished each other…in quite a buddy buddy manner at the conference. Now that’s what I call an educational friendship!

When we talk about India, we are immediately reminded of its diverse tradition, festivals, languages and colors. It has so much to offer to the world that is has left a remarkable mark in the export industry. Today, the Indian traditional handicraft treasure has reached all parts of the world. There are lots of Indian manufacturers, who are exporting their items all over the world. People have realized the beauty and value of handicraft items and purchase the Indian art and craft items with zeal. The Indian handicraft items combine with it the concepts of culture, form, beauty and style. And it’s not a newer concept. Indian Handicraft items were forming a class in themselves since the days of Harappa and Mohenzodaro civilization.

India is a rich land of versatility, whether it is with ‘metals’, or the ‘art’ of manufacturing handicraft items. It is the exclusivity in the designing process that renders aristocracy to our handicraft items. The most famous items in which India has shown its artistic mettle are bamboo, textiles, clay, terracotta and ceramics.

Many temples in South India also bear the mark of Indian handicraft industry. These temples have many hand curved statues and figures of God and Goddess that showcases India’s rich talent in the handicraft industry. These sculptures include figures of Natraj, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Krishna, Goddess Radha, Gautam Buddha and many more. In many old temples, there were pictures imprinted on the walls that would form a story. So in this manner, handicraft became a means of expressing the emotions, nature and lifestyle.

Gradually, the handicraft items also included vases, candle stands, Christmas ornaments, handpaper items and papier mache items to name a few. Today the nations worldwide identify with the place that India has made in the handicraft industry. The museums and trade fairs proudly showcase the Indian Handicraft items, and there buyers who happily purchase a lot of it. A truly dignified import business it is for India!

Whom to believe, and whom to disbelieve?! Sometimes the general public puts its point so vehemently that all our support and sympathies go with them! But then, the other side of the party can not always be wrong! Oh hold on…in sheer excitement and confusion, I think I’m drifting away from the moot point. DDA has recently announced the names of 5,238 successful applicants who have been super lucky to get one DDA flat each under its Housing Scheme 2008.

People in large number gathered there to see the much awaited result (with the same awe and excitement with which students await their results in front of school/college result board). But they were really uprooted to see the in competency of the DDA management! They called the entire practice “unfair” and said that DDA is a promise breaker! If agitated, sad and disappointed public is to be believed, DDA promised to put a huge screen outside the office premises so that all the applicants can view the entire computerized process Live. But guess what- it didn’t happen!

DDA officials say that the public is agitated and the whole process is fair and lawful. But then, joy and sorrow are part of life! The lucky winners are all praise for the DDA, and hail “Long Live DDA”, with joyful tears in their eyes.

Strike has become such a common, eh, allow me to say that, “phenomenon” that almost everyone is using it freely these days! Since the arrival of Sixth Pay Commission, the screams of “We want more pay” can be heard in Delhi. This time it’s the Delhi University lecturers who are not only saying this, but acting this too. News is, that around 8000 Delhi University teachers went on an indefinite strike from 15th December 2008 in an appeal to increase their pay under the revised pay commission.

This time the teachers are firm in their approach and say that they won’t resume their duties till they see any positive action from the HRD ministry. Various echoes from teachers sound somewhat like “pay band 3”, “pay band 4”, “why are varsity teachers in lower range”, “include us in the higher range”, blah blah blah . To end the circle and to put it precisely right, everyone is demanding just one thing- “More Pay”. And to cover everything up, teachers use one word for their strike-“unfortunate”. “It is unfortunate that the strike has happened before the announcement.”

Well students, enjoy the break, watch movies, and sing “The weekend is long…like a never ending song…la la la la hmm hmm.”

If you are planning an overseas trip next year, my personal suggestion is to try the Trio S. Confused? I was talking about Spikes Asia in Singapore in September. The latest Travel News is that tourists are all eyes on Singapore, as soon as the news of Spikes Asia Festival is out. Spikes Asia- the first Asian Advertising Festival, to be held in Singapore would mark the festivities from 16th-18th September next year.

A joint venture between IAF, organizers of Cannes Lions and Haymarket, aims at managing creative event management with “creative minds at work”. The CEO of Cannes Lions, who is associated with the festival is all praise for Asia’s creative excellence, and says that they are working with full zeal and enthusiasm to make Spikes a terrific festival! Another Cannes Lions official says that Singapore offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, easy travel access and committed creativity, which makes it a perfect tour destination to host Spikes Asia.

So visit Singapore draped in festive colors next September, and experiences the rare mix of Beauty and Creativity.

Since long we have been talking about economy, finance, ministers, global slowdown, etc…Let us talk about FM today- not the Finance or Foreign Minister, but the FM Radio that has touched lives tremendously and has emerged as a proliferating business source.

You get excited on listening your favorite songs, hum the music, and sing the songs- indeed a very good source of entertainment. Sounds all sweet and sugar? Read this- “Music companies and FM radio channels are in a tiff for royalty payment!” Tut-tut…a great tension lies underneath this famous Indian music business.

The fight for Royalty is now coming out of the camouflage and recently appeared in front of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The fight precisely is about money- the Music Industry demands more royalty fees, FM Radio Firms say NO! Information and Broadcasting Ministry tried to find the middle way, but retreats from the “we-won’t-budge-an-inch” behavior of both the parties.

Now the Big Boss- Copyright Board would hear the pleas of both the parties and give its verdict on January 28th 2008. Whatever the decision, I hope they don’t stop the FM stations to play the music! Like me, many people are addicted to FM radio, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed, on behalf of all! Oh God, are you listening?

BBC News group has articulated a vision of educating the kids in an interesting manner. The British Broadcasting Corporation has come up with BBC News School Report campaign that aims at inculcating the “good journalism” seeds in their school kids.

The idea is that the students of the various UK schools would create school news, and publish it on their school website. BBC would link its website to those school’s websites, so that people could see the writing and journalism talent of ‘students in their tender age’.

Huw Edwards, a chief official of ‘The BBC News School Report’ says that the campaign is aimed towards infusing the principles of smart and effective journalism in kids. Sometime Kids have such a sense of discretion and thought process that they present the incidents/issues/debates that are “really” important to people at large. So these kids can decide the factors of ‘what’, ‘who’ and ‘for whom’, and form news from any and all corners of the world. The results would be out on the 29th March, 2009- so the big kids (does it sound an oxymoron??!) have ample of preparation time! Good luck journos!

Topic of discussion: “All countries in the world, rich and poor, are vulnerable to corruption, so corruption is not a development issue at all.” Our Mumbaia girls Devika and Ayesha spoke for and against the motion respectively. Both the girls won the hearts of esteemed judges and earned the champions trophy to their credit.

The winners of the competition were decided on various parameters and the winning countries included India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Pakistan.

Corruption is a global problem, and has spread it roots widely. The competition served as a platform for budding students to come up with some thought-provoking and practically applicable views and suggestions. The judges were happily surprised to see the thought process of these students, and said that they sounded extremely rational, analytical and reflective in their approach.

Go on long drives and enjoy your journeys without any hitch of petrol expenses! Fuel prices have dwindled, and what’s more- there’s a scope for more fuel price cut!

Last week a streak of joy swept in when the Government announced a petrol price cut by Rs.5 and diesel by Rs.2. People were happy and thanked the government for bringing this much needed reform. However, there are few people who are not “so-happy” with the deduction and said they “were expecting more”.

The Finance Minister, Oops, I mean the then Finance Minister (and now the Home Minister) had indicated in February 2008 that they have taken adequate steps in getting the fuel prices down (For eg:- they made the prices of petrol and diesel equivalent to crude oil prices, reduced custom duty on fuels, etc.,) and would soon be out with the reduced prices. So we can assume that they have fulfilled their “in-between-the-line” promise.

And what’s more, this time it’s the Oil Ministry who is indicating yet another price cut. Yes it’s a mere hint, but a hopeful hint nonetheless that a key official from Oil Ministry gave. He has said that the in spite of the reduced prices, oil companies are able to make good profit from the petrol and diesel sale, which suggests more chances of price cut. So it’s a Happy-“go”-lucky news for all Indian commuters and Indian business.
