Delhi Doctors at Receiving End
September 5, 2008 – 6:58 pmDoctors being beaten up by relatives of a dead patient are routine in government hospitals. These instances are generally followed by doctors striking work and resuming only after assurances by government authorities. Despite several promises, no concrete action has been taken in this regard by Delhi government.
Poor infrastructure, lack of facilities, etc. have been some of the major issues doctors in various government hospitals have been raising from last few years. In the recent past, a majority of the strikes have resulted after the relatives of a patient bashed up the doctor.
The doctors say security in government run Delhi hospitals is very poor. There aren’t enough security guards manning hospital compounds. When a patient dies even outsiders gather at hospital and creates a lot of nuisance.
Lack of basic medical equipment makes it hard for doctors to work. Apart from they need to feel secure and safe to deliver good results. Better security has been a demand of the doctors and the government officials admit that security in the hospitals requires changes. Authorities tried different arrangements, but nothing worked. The security in hospitals is a big concern now. But, the doctors’ attitude is also partly responsible for the current situation.
